When does the 2020-21 tax year start?

The 2020-21 tax year will begin on 6 April 2020 and end on 5 April 2021. Each tax, or financial year, has a series of important deadlines for businesses, investors and trustees to follow, where penalties will be applied by HMRC for late payment.

April 2020

  • 1 April 2020 – 2020/21 financial year begins

Deadlines for submitting VAT returns 2020/21

Whether you pay your VAT monthly or quarterly, through MTD for eligible businesses, the deadline for submitting your return is 1 month and 7 days after the end of the VAT period. Here are the key dates for submitting VAT returns in the 2020/21 tax year:

Update as of 20 March 2020: Mr Sunak announced a VAT payment deferral to help businesses manage their finances during the COVID-19 outbreak. VAT returns are to be prepared, filed and submitted by their due dates above as usual, but payments due from 20 March 2020 and 30 June 2020 will be automatically deferred, with taxpayers given until 5 April 2021 to pay any amounts due during this period.

Corporation Tax deadlines 2020/21

Paid by all UK limited companies, Corporation Tax payments are due 9 months and 1 day after year-end, so the deadline adjusts depending on your year end. For example, for companies with a year-end of 31 December 2019, the due date for Corporation Tax payment is 1 October 2020.
